The iPhone 4S looks glaringly identical to the iPhone 4 in both design and weight. Switch on the phone, however, and things are different. The new A5 dual-core processor (as seen in the iPad 2) makes things noticeably nippier with faster multitasking, app launches and web page loading. Another benefit of having the A5 processor is to mirror 4S content over AirPlay. Wirelessly, the 4S will push out 720p to an Apple TV. Both the 4S's antennas, which run around the top of the phone, can transmit and receive data, allowing for faster 3G connections. The camera's had a major overhaul, now capable of taking eight-megapixel stills and recording 1080p video. Photos are crisper, no question and iOS 5 brings with it the option to use the '+' button as shutter when taking landscape shots. Face detection is also an upgrade and works well. Syncing music and apps with iTunes on your desktop are now done through Wi-Fi. iCloud is a new feature in that syncs your contacts, calendar, and photos wirelessly onto a remote server when Wi-Fi access is available.
The main talking point of the iPhone 4S, quite literally, is Siri – a voice-controlled in-built app that acts like your own PA. Those who have used Google Voice Search or Vlingo on the Android will find Siri similar to those apps. What separates Siri from its rivals is that you don't have to talk to it like a robot, but instead talk to it like a person and ask it questions or to do tasks for you. Apple claims that the software adapts to the user's individual preferences over time and personalizes results, and performing tasks such as finding recommendations for nearby restaurants, or getting directions.
